6 June 2012, Endicott, NY — D & R Technical Solutions, Inc. is pleased to announce that Joseph A. Dell'Arciprete, a Senior at Binghamton High School, was selected to receive the annual Valerie and Devin Spears Memorial Scholarship. Joseph was chosen from several applicants, all of which were well qualified, making this year’s selection very difficult. Joseph received the scholarship at the Binghamton High School Award ceremony on May 30, 2012. Valerie Spears worked at D & R from 1993 until her and Devin’s tragic death in 2002. Every year since then D & R has offered a $500 scholarship to Binghamton High School students. Applicants must meet criteria that the company feels best described Valerie; seeking to continue education in a technical or engineering field, have a B or greater average, and active in school and extracurricular activities. They must compose a 500-word essay on why they believe they are the correct candidate.
Valerie’s daughter Devin, was a common face in D & R’s office. When Devin was done with rehearsals at the Endicott Performing Arts Center (EPAC) Theater, which is within convenient walking distance from D & R, she would sit in an empty cubicle and work on her homework until Valerie was done for the day. Nothing can replace their loss, but the company offers this scholarship to keep their memory alive.

1 March 2012 – Endicott, NY — D & R Technical Solutions, Inc., announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Siemens Transportation Systems to develop 12 new troubleshooting scenarios for the R160 Railcar 3D Troubleshooting Simulator, which is located at New York City Transit’s (NYCT) Learning Center in Brooklyn, NY. Siemens Transportation Systems designed and produced state-of-the-art propulsion systems used in R160 railcars built by Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., for NYCT. R160 railcars are the most advanced in NYCT’s current fleet.

The R160 Railcar 3D Troubleshooting Simulator was developed by D & R as a tool to help familiarize NYCT maintainers with these latest troubleshooting technologies. It presents students with a 3D modeled, 10-car R160 train, in which an instructor has inserted one or more faults for the students to troubleshoot and repair. The simulator, which consists of 11 networked workstations (one instructor and ten students) was originally designed and built for Alstom Transportation, Inc., who with Kawasaki formed ALSKAW to provide R160 railcars to NYCT.

September 2011, Brooklyn, NY — D & R successfully completed an update of the R160 Railcar 3D Troubleshooting Simulator software at New York City Transit’s (NYCT) Learning Center. The major component of this update was to include troubleshooting scenarios for the automated passenger door system on R160 cars provided by Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. The previous iteration of this software only demonstrated fault isolation for the automated passenger door system on R160 cars built by Alstom Transport.

The R160 railcars are NYCT’s latest acquisition and incorporate state-of-the-art troubleshooting capability, utilizing an internal monitoring and diagnostic system and externally connected laptop computers with system level diagnostic software. The R160 3D Troubleshooting Simulator was developed by D & R as a tool to help familiarize NYCT maintainers with these latest troubleshooting technologies. The internals of the software are built on fully detailed 3D CAD models of R160 A-Cars and B-Cars, coupled together to form two five-car units to make a 10-car train. The software operates on a LAN network consisting of an instructor station and 10 student workstations. The instructor sets up fault scenarios for the students to troubleshoot and monitors student progress real-time. Results are saved by the instructor station for later comparative analysis. The latest update also included several enhancements to the user interface.
